Applications now open for the International Women's Day Loretta Baker Scholarship

Maitland City Council is opening applications for the inaugural International Women's Day Loretta Baker Scholarship.

Council unanimously supported a motion at the final meeting of the last term, proposed by former councillor Stephanie Fisher, to establish a perpetual scholarship to support the aspirations of local women in honour of Loretta Baker and integrate into the annual International Women’s Day program.

This $1,000 scholarship celebrates the achievements and potential of young women in the Maitland local government area, supporting their goals in their chosen fields, like arts, culture, environment, business, local government, community, health, or sport.

General Manager Jeff Smith said the Scholarship reflects Council's commitment to empowering women and fostering opportunities for future leaders.

"By supporting women to achieve their goals, we're building stronger communities and celebrating their valuable contributions," said Mr Smith.

Named in honour of Loretta Baker, Maitland's first female mayor, the Scholarship continues her leadership, mentorship and community service legacy. Ms Baker served as a councillor for 16 years and mayor from 2017 to 2021.

Ms Baker said she is proud to support the initiative.

"This scholarship is a meaningful way to celebrate the incredible women in our community and help them take the next step in achieving their goals," she said.

Applications close on Sunday 9 February, and require character references and a personal statement describing how their goals align with the Scholarship's purpose.

Shortlisted applicants will attend an International Women's Day event in March 2025, where Council will announce the recipient. For more information or to apply, visit mait.city/Loretta-Baker-Scholarship
