Free event will celebrate the talent and passions of local young people
A youth led initiative to enhance Council's engagement with young people will culminate in a showcase of music, art and performance on Saturday 30 November.
The Youth Empowering Participation (YEP) Group has been working hard over the past two months to plan the free all ages event, CELEBRATE, to be held at Sun Street Studios from 2.00pm to 6.00pm.
Council recruited the group of 11 young people by way of expression of interest in September and has been supporting them through all the logistics of event planning from risk management to catering.
The drug and alcohol free event will feature two stages with live music from local bands, artists, drama performers, activities, creative workshops and food.
Council will also use the event as an opportunity to find out how Council should be communicating with young people and what issues and topics are of greatest interest to them. Feedback from the event will be used to inform an engagement plan for development of a Youth Strategy and help Council reach the young people it most needs to hear from.
Acting Coordinator Recreation and Community Planning Coralie McPhie says ‘'We're proud to have been able to give our local young people an opportunity to gain insight into the world of event planning as well as design an event specifically for their peers.
'It's also an opportunity to celebrate the huge talent we have in our community and for young people to express themselves and what is important to them through music, art and performance. I hope our community will get behind this exciting event and support our young people who have worked so hard in a short time to pull this together.’
The event has been made possible thanks to a grant from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.
