Hip hip hooray: Help us celebrate Maitland Park’s 140th birthday

One of Maitland’s most iconic sites will pass a significant milestone next month, with Maitland Park set to celebrate its 140th birthday.

Monday 9 December 2024 will mark 140 years since Maitland Park opened to the public in 1884, making it one of the oldest civic parks in NSW.

To honour the occasion, Maitland City Council will hold a community open day at Maitland Aquatic Centre, including free entry to the pool between 10am and 4pm, a free sausage sizzle, ice blocks and a birthday cake.

Maitland City Council General Manager Jeff Smith says, “an important milestone like this deserves to be celebrated in style.”

“Maitland Park is a much-loved community space and our city’s premier parkland, so we’re asking residents to join us on Monday 9 December to mark this momentous occasion,” Mr Smith said.

“Enjoy a free BBQ, some cake and take a dip in our fantastic outdoor pool at Maitland Aquatic Centre before taking a stroll around the beautiful Maitland Park.”

Maitland Park is a unique space home to significant parkland and recreation facilities such as the renowned hockey centre and Maitland Netball Courts, with heritage elements including state monuments and memorials.

The area also regularly hosts sporting competitions on a local, state and national level including cricket, croquet, netball, touch football, soccer and triathlon.

Celebrations will begin from 10am with the cake cutting to take place at 12.30pm.
