New $26 million intersection opens at Raymond Terrace Road and Government Road, Thornton
Maitland City Council has officially opened the new four-way intersection at Raymond Terrace Road and Government Road in Thornton.
Jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government, the $26 million project has seen new traffic lights installed, dedicated right-hand turning lanes added and both roads widened to two-lanes in each direction.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold says, “We’re proud to deliver this critical piece of infrastructure for the people of Thornton.”
“Thornton is one of the fastest growing suburbs in Maitland and this upgrade will help ease traffic congestion for residents, visitors and commuters which is great news for our community,” Mayor Penfold said.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, and Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison says “I have long advocated for significant road upgrades for the fast-growing Thornton and Chisholm communities, the fastest growing area in the state outside the Sydney basin for over 20 years.
“I am proud to be part of a Government which is funding and delivering significant upgrades to this area such as this one, the M1 to Raymond Terrace project and the duplication of Thornton Rail Bridge.”
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the NSW Government has contributed $9.5 million to the project through the Housing Acceleration Fund which provides grants for critical infrastructure projects to accelerate the delivery of new housing.
“Raymond Terrace Road is one of busiest roads in the Maitland LGA so this intersection upgrade will benefit thousands of commuters who use the road every day while improving safety for local residents,” Mr Scully said.
“We want to make sure that homes are built in places where people want to live. To achieve this there needs to be supporting community infrastructure such as better roads, active transport links and good quality open spaces.”
Council acknowledges the extended timeframe taken to complete the project due to intermittent wet weather delays and supply chain issues, and thanks the community for their patience.
This project is part of Maitland City Council’s long-term strategy for the Thornton Road Network to improve traffic infrastructure for the people of Thornton, Chisholm and surrounds.
