New Council sponsorship locks in support for local up and coming athletes
Maitland City Council is contributing $17,000 in funding to Hunter Academy of Sport in a bid to open up accessibility to specialised training programs for local young athletes.
The Hunter based not for profit organisation has provided local development opportunities for pre-elite and elite athletes throughout the Hunter region for 30 years, having trained over 16,500 athletes since its inception.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said Maitland Council was ‘proud to assist Hunter Academy of Sport in its mission of nurturing young talent across the region, supporting aspiring athletes on their journey and helping them fulfill their potential.’
A key contributor to Australia’s continued sporting success, Hunter Academy of Sport tracked the progress of five alumni when they represented Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games earlier this year, in disciplines such as hockey, water polo, athletics and sailing.
’At HAS, we’re dedicated to removing barriers for young athletes and ensuring that talent from all backgrounds has a chance to thrive,’ HAS Chief Executive Officer Brett O’Farrell said.
‘This generous support from Maitland City Council will directly benefit our athletes, opening up pathways for them to access specialised training and gain invaluable experience to reach their full potential.
‘We’re incredibly grateful for Council’s commitment to fostering local talent and empowering the next generation of champions.’
Through the Hunter Academy of Sport, young athletes can access strength and conditioning services, expert coaches and educational programs that span injury prevention and treatment, sport psychology, ethical sportsmanship, nutrition, fitness optimisation and personal growth.
