Over $1 million in road safety upgrades secured for Thornton and Chisholm
Maitland City Council has secured more than $1 million to complete critical road safety upgrades in Thornton and Chisholm.
Funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program 2024/25, the grants include $568,000 to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Tigerhawk and Heritage Drive, Chisholm and $486,000 to install a raised median along Desalis Drive, Thornton.
Both areas have recorded high accident rates, including several serious crashes at the Tigerhawk and Heritage Drive intersection and one fatality along Desalis Drive since 2017.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold says the funding ‘will provide necessary safety improvements in two high traffic areas.’
‘These upgrades will help protect all road users, particularly residents and commuters who regularly travel through Thornton and Chisholm, which is great news for our community,’ Mayor Penfold says.
Council is working to determine timelines for both projects and will update the community when they are shovel ready.
