Telarah Lagoon update
This week's water sampling has revealed Blue Green Algae levels have increased to Red Alert status in Telarah Lagoon and a cautionary Amber Alert in the Walka Water Works Lagoon.
Blue Green Algae is naturally present in the water in small quantities. However, its numbers escalate into blooms when there are high nutrients, warm temperatures and stagnant water.
We will continue to monitor the waterway as Blue Green Algae can pose health risks to humans due to the potential release of toxins and skin irritants. It's important to keep domestic pets and livestock away from the water to avoid contact.
In light of the warmer weather, it is essential to remain vigilant when accessing or engaging in recreational activities around water systems such as dams and waterways. Please consider any signage at public sites, including warnings against fishing. For more information, visit mait.city/wetlands-and-waterways.
