Major drainage installed along Raymond Terrace Road

Thornton North Intersection upgrade passes major milestone

Work on the Thornton North intersection upgrade has passed a major milestone this month, with the completion of the main stormwater drain on Raymond Terrace Road.

In partnership with the NSW Government, Maitland City Council is working to complete a $26 million upgrade to the intersection of Raymond Terrace Road and Government Road in Thornton.

Crews have now finished installing a 700 metre drainage line along the northern side of Raymond Terrace Road and with that complete, Council’s Manager Works Ashley Kavanagh said the focus will ‘now shift towards the construction of the intersection’s northern leg.’

‘This new section of road will create a four way intersection, allowing traffic to flow through the area more easily, and we expect it to open early next year,’ Mr Kavanagh said.

‘We will then begin to widen both Raymond Terrace Road and Government Road into two lanes each way.’

Work is also continuing along Government Road, with the installation of stormwater drainage nearing completion.

Changed traffic conditions will remain in place while work occurs. However, crews will do their best to minimise disruptions.

‘We’re making every effort to maintain two way travel on Raymond Terrace Road during peak times to minimise disruption to road users,’ Mr Kavanagh said.

‘We thank residents and commuters for their patience during this time, as we work hard to deliver critical infrastructure for those living and travelling through Thornton and Chisholm.’

The project is on track for completion in the third quarter of 2024.
