Description
The draft Maitland Park Masterplan is now available for public comment. The previous Masterplan was adopted in 2014 and has recently been revised and approved to be placed on public exhibition at the 10 December 2024 Council meeting. The Masterplan will guide the future development of Maitland Park. The design focuses on the following principles:
- Bring the ‘heart’ back into the park by enhancing it’s citywide appeal
- Provide a pedestrian friendly and vibrant civic space
- Reclaim green open space by improving parking and road efficiency within and around the park
- Provide more recreational opportunities for the community and tourists
- Create a playspace that reflects the importance of Maitland Park to the community by upgrading the existing playspace
The design considers the existing and future needs for passive and active recreation in the park and some of the key changes include:
- Traffic flow changes, with the main gate being entry only
- Bus/coach bay and taxi rank located near the aquatic centre
- Increased car parking throughout
- New passive open space and car park replacing the bowling club
- Improved pedestrian access throughout the park
- Upgrade of the Maitland Park Playspace
- Provision of additional fitness station
- Removal of two existing small playspaces located near Devonshire St and a future playspace to be built near the netball courts
- Enclosed cricket net training facility
- Retention and restoration of heritage monuments throughout the park
- Expansion of the outer field amenities
