Description

Maitland City Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from appropriately qualified and experienced persons to appoint as Chair of Council’s Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC) commencing from 1 January 2023.

The Committee will comprise of three independent external members (including the Chair) and one Councillor. The Committee meets a minimum of four times per year at Maitland City Council offices or remotely. The Chair receives remuneration of $15,000 per annum.

This is an advisory committee to Council providing independent assurance, oversight, and assistance to Council in the areas of risk, control, improvements, governance, financial reporting, and performance.

The position of Chair is pivotal to the effectiveness and the focal point for the ARIC’s relationship with Council, General Manager, internal audit provider and external auditor.

Council is seeking an experienced Chair with qualifications and experience in areas such as accounting and financial management, risk management and corporate improvement.

The person chosen for this role should exhibit exceptional communication and negotiation skills, independence of mind in their deliberations and not act as a representative of a particular area of the community or Council and be astute to avoid conflicts of interest.

Selection criteria

Attach a cover letter addressing the following, briefly explaining how your qualifications or experience meet the criteria and giving examples of current/past work experience that satisfies Maitland City Council’s ARIC Terms of Reference. 

Applications must show:

  1. Professional qualifications and/or knowledge and expertise such as accounting, legal, risk management, auditing, business or planning, to support the activities required of the ARIC Chair
  2. Demonstrated understanding of the role of the ARIC, including both internal and external audit and their importance
  3. Demonstrated understanding of knowledge/experience of Local Government, including corporate governance and how ISO 31000:2018 supports this process
  4. Demonstrate current/prior experience on similar, role and or committees.
