Council secures $5 million for crucial road upgrades in Thornton

Maitland City Council has secured a $5 million grant to help fund significant road upgrades in Thornton, one of the fastest growing suburbs in the region. 

Funded by Round 4 of the NSW Government’s State Voluntary Planning Agreements, the grant will go towards constructing a new two-lane roundabout at the intersection of Haussman Drive and Taylor Avenue.

Maitland City Council General Manager Jeff Smith says this is part of a wider package of planned road improvements that will “help ease traffic congestion for residents living in Thornton, Chisholm and surrounds.”

“Maitland is one of the fastest growing cities in NSW, welcoming almost 3,000 people each year and we need to make sure we have the road infrastructure to keep pace with that growth,” Mr Smith said.

“This is just one of many grant applications we’ve made to support the Haussman Drive upgrade, and we’re pleased it was successful. We look forward to hearing the results of our other grant applications in due course.”

Maitland City Council’s nomination was one of 22 successful projects announced this round from a total of 57 applicants.

Council plans to begin preliminary works including utility relocations early next year, with full construction timelines to be confirmed with the grant body.

Council is also awaiting the outcome of a $32 million grant submission for various infrastructure upgrades in Thornton, including new traffic lights at the intersection of Haussman Drive and Raymond Terrace Road, under the Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (RPPP) and the Housing Support Program.
