Maitland Regional Art Gallery transformed with a vibrant autumn exhibition season
This autumn, Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) presents seven captivating new exhibitions, inviting art lovers to explore the building jam-packed with theatrical artworks, opera, paintings bursting with colour, and stories of survival and resistance.
Showcasing a mix of established and emerging artists, the exhibitions highlight bold abstractions, such as Singing in Harmony by Capper and Cuppaidge, alongside personal narratives from artist Mostafa Azimitabar. These works, along with cutting-edge film creations, provide fresh perspectives on the world of art.
The season kicks off with the Autumn Exhibition Opening Celebration on Friday 28 March from 5.30pm, where visitors can enjoy an evening of art and conversation while exploring the exhibitions.
Gallery Director Gerry Bobsien says the autumn exhibitions offer an opportunity to engage with a broad range of artistic expressions.
“One of the things we love about our Gallery is the capacity to put on so many diverse and interesting art exhibitions under the one roof. Our autumn season ranges from deeply personal stories to thought-provoking commentary on the world around us.
"Whether you're drawn to bold paintings, intimate and personal artistic stories, or innovative filmmaking, these exhibitions offer something for everyone making MRAG a must-visit destination this autumn."
Visitors can explore the following exhibitions at MRAG this autumn:
- Singing in Harmony – Artists Chris Capper and Virginia Cuppaidge engage in a vivid dialogue between structure and spontaneity, challenging perceptions of colour and abstraction.
- My Message is Love – Mostafa ‘Moz’ Azimitabar presents a powerful reflection on resilience, hope and the transformative power of art.
- Barely Glimpsed – Patrick Mavety captures the landscapes of Maitland and beyond, celebrating the fleeting beauty of everyday surroundings through a painter’s lens.
- Us – Gillian Bencke explores the stories we tell through objects and symbols, prompting reflection on how we curate personal and cultural history.
- Margaret and the Grey Mare – Katy B Plummer blends opera, video and artificial intelligence to create an immersive exploration of witchcraft and feminist storytelling.
- The Ubiquitous Myth of the Eerie Wife – In her second exhibition, Plummer responds to Ron Mueck’s Pregnant Woman, delving into themes of motherhood, matrilineal inheritance and creative legacy.
- Brenda Clouten Memorial Art Scholarship Exhibition – Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this exhibition showcases works from 11 outstanding emerging artists from the Hunter region across painting, photography, sculpture, digital and installation art.
