Your guide to Maitland’s autumn school holiday program

Maitland is the place to be these autumn school holidays, with a packed program of free and affordable activities across the city’s libraries, art gallery and pools.

From archaeology and architecture to creative arts and outdoor adventures, there’s something for children and teens of all ages to enjoy this April.

The school holidays also coincide with Youth Week, celebrated from the 9 to 17 April 2025, with the theme I am... We are the future, and the future is now! Guided by feedback from local young people, Council has developed a program of engaging events designed to connect and entertain. View the full program at mait.city/YouthWeek2025

Maitland libraries
Step back in time at Maitland libraries with ‘Digging up Maitland’, where kids can uncover artefacts and learn how to explore history like real archaeologists.

LEGO lovers can get hands-on with Bricks 4 Kidz, building superhero-themed masterpieces. Those more creatively inclined can enjoy a Wicked-themed ‘Crafty Cinema’, bird walks and tree planting activities inspired by Maitland’s natural environment. Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG)
MRAG is bursting with workshops for kids and teens this season. Drop in these school holidays from Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 1pm, where kids can craft collages inspired by artists Chris Capper and Virginia Cuppaidge or sculpt tactile artworks influenced by Gillian Benke’s Us exhibition.

Teens and tweens can explore clay mask making with artist Indeah Clark or try their hand at Cyanotype photography with artist Claire Paul. Families can also join Katy B Plumber’s iron-on patch workshop, stitching personal stories into unique fabric designs. All materials supplied for workshops.

Young architecture enthusiasts aged 12 to 16 can take part in a special workshop led by artist Jen Denzin and a student architect from the University of Newcastle. Find out more at mait.city/MRAGWhatsOn
