A-Z waste and recycling guide

See below for our A to Z guide on how to best dispose and recycle of your waste and household items.

Note: When disposing of your items, please consider if they are in reusable condition. To encourage a sustainable future, we recommend reselling or donating your quality items where possible.

A - D

A

Empty aerosol cans and bottles can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Empty containers of agricultural and vet products can be disposed of on DrumMuster drop off dates. Containers must carry the DrumMuster logo.
Air conditioners can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Aluminium cans, foil and trays should be rinsed and disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Animal poo, such as dog poo and kitty litter, can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Dead animals, including deceased domestic pets, can be disposed of at the waste facility for a fee, however, bookings are required.
Non-refrigerated appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility

Refrigerated appliances such as fridges, freezers and air conditioners can only be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
A licenced asbestos professional is required to remove more than 10 square metres (100kg) of asbestos
All asbestos deliveries to the waste facility must be booked 24 hours in advance by calling 4934 1888. Asbestos loads are only accepted on Wednesdays and Fridays
Asbestos loads exceeding 10 square metres (100kg), must be registered with NSW EPA.
Follow the Asbestos Guidelines for help with removal and disposal.
Ashes can be disposed of in your red general waste bin once they are cold and contained.

B

Baby wipes should never be flushed in the toilet. Please dispose in your red general waste bin.
Warning!

Batteries are hazardous and should never be put in your recycling or garbage bin.

Household alkaline or lithium batteries (for example AAA, AA, C, D, E, or button cell batteries) can be disposed of for no charge at the the waste facility, through a RecycleSmart collection or at any B-Cycle location.

If the battery can not be easily removed or is embedded in a product, leave it as is and recycle for no charge at the waste facility or via other e-waste programs like Mobile Muster or TechCollect.
BBQs can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility.
Empty beauty product jars and bottles can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin or at a Terracycle drop off point, available participating at Priceline stores.
Bicycles can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility.
If in reusable condition, please consider donating to your local charity or to a community book exchange.

Books can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Glass and plastic bottles and bottle tops can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Small tree branches that can be cut to fit, can be disposed of in your green garden organics bin

Branches 1.5m length and no more than 100mm thick, can be bundled together and tied with natural string to be disposed of using the kerbside collection option of the Bulky Waste Service

Branches 1.5m length and over 100mm thick can be disposed of using the waste voucher options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility
Bricks can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Bubble wrap can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Building, demolition and construction waste can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.

C

Aluminium cans be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Cardboard can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.

Large amounts of cardboard can be disposed of for no charge if less than 60kgs, or for a fee if over 60kgs at the waste facility.
Carpet can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
CDs can be recycled using the RecycleSmart collection service

CDs and DVDs (discs only) can be recycled at participating Officeworks stores

CD cases can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Cellophane can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Chairs can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Chemicals and chemical containers can be disposed of at Chemical CleanOut dates

Chemical drums can be disposed of at DrumMuster events.
Clothing in poor condition can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.

Clothing in reusable condition can be donated to a local charity, instore or via a donation bin or to your closest H&M store.
Takeaway coffee cups and coffee grounds can be disposed of in your red general waste bin

Coffee pods can be recycled at various locations in Maitland. Alternatively, they can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Computers and laptops can be disposed of using the kerbside collection option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility.

Computers and laptops can also be recycled at a local eCycle drop off point.
Construction, demolition and building waste can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Cooking oil can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility.
If in reusable condition, please consider donating or reselling crockery

Damaged or broken crockery can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.

D

Dead animals, including deceased domestic pets, can be disposed of at the waste facility for a fee, however, bookings are required.
Paper plates and bowls can be disposed of in the yellow recycling bin, once cleaned of food scraps.

Bamboo or biodegradable plates and bowls can be disposed of in the red general waste bin.
Dog poo can be disposed of in your red general waste bin after being wrapped in a plastic or paper bag first.
DVD players can be disposed of using the kerbside collection option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility.
DVDs discs can be recycled at participating OfficeWorks stores.

DVD cases can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.

E

Electronic waste such as TVs, computers, laptops and phones can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge if under 60kgs, or for a fee if over 60kgs at the waste facility.
All envelopes can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.

F

Face masks can be disposed of in your red general waste bin. They are not recyclable.
Fans can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Fire extinguishers can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility.
Firewood ash can be disposed of in your red general waste bin once they are cold and contained.
Fluoro globes and tubes can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility or through a RecycleSmart collection.
Foil can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin after food scraps are removed and foil has been rinsed.
Fridges and freezers can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Furniture can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility

Metal furniture can also be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility.

Small garden waste such as grass clippings, pruning, twigs and leaves can be disposed of in your green garden organics bin.

Drinking glassware, small windows and mirrors can be disposed of in your red general waste bin

Large glass items can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Gravel can be disposed of for a fee at the waste facility.

Hair appliances can be collected through RecycleSmart or disposed of for no charge at the waste facility.

CloudNine also recycle old hair appliances free of charge.
Electric heaters can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility (if under 60kgs)

Oil heaters can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility once the oil has been drained out.
Hot water units can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility.

K

Kettles can be collected through the Recyclesmart collection service

Kettles can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility.
Kitty litter can be disposed of in your red general waste bin after being placed in a compostable or biodegradable bag.

L

Laminated wood can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Computers and laptops can be disposed of using kerbside collection option of the Bulky Waste Service, for no charge at the waste facility or through a RecycleSmart collection.

Computers and laptops can also be recycled at a local eCycle drop off point.
Light globes and tubes can be disposed of using kerbside collection option of the Bulky Waste Service, for no charge at the waste facility or through a RecycleSmart collection.

Broken light globes can be disposed of in your red general waste bin after being wrapped in paper or secured in a plastic bag.
Linoleum can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Lounges can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.

Empty cosmetic containers can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin or at a Terracycle drop off point, available at participating Priceline stores.
Mattresses can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Medical waste cannot be accepted at the waste facility and must be disposed of safely and responsibly via an independent, licenced contractor.
Medicines should not be disposed of in any of your kerbside bins.

Unwanted or expired medicine can be disposed of at participating local pharmacies and chemists.

Empty blister packets can be recycled at Pharmacycle participating chemists.
Milk cartons can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Small mirrors can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.

Large mirrors can be disposed of for a fee at the waste facility.
Mobile phones can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility or through a RecycleSmart collection.

Mobile phones can also be recycled at a local Mobile Muster drop off point or at Officeworks.
Motor oil can be disposed of at the waste facility

Motor oil and fuel can also be disposed of at Chemical CleanOut events

N

Single use nappies can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Sharps, needles and syringes can be disposed of at dedicated community sharps bins located at Maitland Hospital (24/7), outside Maitland Library (under the footbridge) and Rutherford Library & Community Centre (outside wall, near the library entrance).

Motor oil can be disposed of at the waste facility

Other oils such as cooking, hydraulic, and brake fluid can be disposed of at the waste facility

Motor oil and fuel can also be disposed of on Chemical CleanOut dates (20kg or less).

P

Paint can be disposed of for no charge (100 litres or less) at the waste facility or at Chemical CleanOut events (up to 20 litres).

Empty paint tins can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Paper can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin

Shredded paper can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin. Please consider containing it in a paper bag prior to recycling.
Photos can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Pizza boxes can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin after scraping free of food.
Single use plastic bottles can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin once they are empty.
Plastic plates can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin after scraping free of food

Plastic cutlery can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Plastic bags and packaging can be disposed of in your red general waste bin. They should not be placed in your yellow recycling bin.
Poisons can be disposed of at Chemical CleanOut events (up to 20 litres).
Polystyrene can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility (small packing beans excluded).
Pool chemicals can be disposed of at Chemical CleanOut events (up to 20 litres).
Hand held power tools can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility.
Printer cartridges and toners can be recycled for no charge at the waste facility.

They can also be disposed of at any Officeworks store or at participating Cartridges4PlanetArk drop off location.

R

Rechargeable batteries should never be placed in any of your kerbside bins. They can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility.
Roof insulation can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility (roof insulation must be bundled).
Roof tiles can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Rugs can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.

Sand can be disposed of for a fee at the waste facility.
Scrap metal can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for no charge at the waste facility.

Loose leaf tea can be composted.

Tiles can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Solid, untreated timber can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility. Excludes manufactured, painted or stained timber, branches and logs or timber with metal or plastic fixtures.
Tin cans can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin.
Tissues can be disposed of in your red general waste bin.
Toasters can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Tools predominantly made of metal can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility

Hand held power tools and other tools can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.

Tyres and wheels can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service (max of two), or for a fee at the waste facility. Includes rims, car, 4wd and motorcycle tyres only. Excludes tractor and truck tyres.

Vacuums can be disposed of using the waste voucher or kerbside collection options of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Residents can recycle up to 10 vapes per visit, for no charge, at Summerhill Waste Management Centre. For safety reasons, please transport them in a bag or bucket and notify the team that you are disposing vapes upon arrival.

Refrigerated whitegoods appliances such as fridges, freezers and air conditioners can only be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Small windows and mirrors can be disposed of in your red general waste bin

Large glass items can be disposed of using the waste voucher option of the Bulky Waste Service, or for a fee at the waste facility.
Wrapping paper (if made from paper) can be disposed of in your yellow recycling bin. Please fold and remove all sticky tape.

Glitter, tinsel, sequins, ribbon, cellophane and foil can be disposed of in the red general waste bin.

X

X-rays can be disposed of for no charge at the waste facility.
