William S Pender was a long time resident of Maitland and co-founder of Pender Bros Pty Ltd Timber and Hardware Merchants and Manufacturers of Apiarists Requirements in West Maitland. Mr Pender was widely regarded as one of the best authorities in Australia on beekeeping and was well known internationally for his work in the industry. He was an ingenious designer and manufacturer of locally customised beekeeping equipment as was the founding editor of ‘The Australasian Beekeeper’ from 1899 until 1931.
