Sellers and shoppers participating in the Garage Sale Trail

Buy, sell and reuse with Garage Sale Trail this November

Households across Maitland are encouraged to open their garage doors to savvy shoppers on 9–10 and 16–17 November for the annual Garage Sale Trail, Australia’s biggest secondhand treasure hunt.

Maitland residents can cash in on their clutter by hosting a garage sale or joining a group sale over the two weekends, made easy with free how to guides, sale tips and readymade promotional materials.

Meanwhile, shoppers of the trail are bound to score preloved everyday essentials or unearth one of a kind finds at bargain prices.

‘Joining or shopping the trail, whether you’re participating for just one day or all four, is a simple and fun way to make or save a buck and keep quality, usable items out of landfill,’ says Maitland City Council Manager Environment and Sustainability Catherine Pepper.

Maitland City Council is one of more than 80 participating councils Australia wide partnering with Garage Sale Trail, to extend the lifespan of household items and increase secondhand buying and selling throughout the community.

'Choosing to reuse plays a big part in reducing the amount of waste we create into the future, so we encourage everyone to get involved in the Garage Sale Trail and begin building sustainable practices into your daily life,’ Ms Pepper says.

This year, Garage Sale Trail anticipates there will be up to 500,000 Australians selling and shopping secondhand, with up to 15,000 garage sales and three million preloved items listed nationally.
