Young people

Youth

We’re committed to supporting young people in Maitland by providing opportunities to develop skills, explore interests and thrive in our community.

Young people (15–24 years) make up approx. 12.2% of Maitland’s population, in line with state and national trends. As our city grows, we’re focused on making Maitland a great place for young people to live, learn and connect.

Youth Week

Youth Week is an annual NSW-wide celebration held in April for young people aged 12–24 years. It’s an opportunity to share ideas, take action on important issues, and enjoy fun events and activities. Each year, a unique theme guides discussions and activities, encouraging young people to have a voice in their community.

Youth Week 2026

Running from Thursday 16 April to Sunday 26 April, Youth Week 2026 will embrace the theme 'Dream. Dare. Do.'

We have developed a program of events for Youth Week 2026 that has been guided by feedback from our local youth community. The program features a variety of activities and events across Maitland, including:

  • Live music performances
  • Creative art experiences
  • Digital and technology workshops
  • Community days
  • Wellbeing and personal development workshops
  • Outdoor and nature activities

Youth Week Live

A highlight of the program is Youth Week Live, an exciting evening of live music at Maitland Regional Art Gallery celebrating young musical talent from across the Hunter.

In collaboration with local schools and emerging bands, the event will showcase a variety of performances from talented young musicians. Enjoy solo acts inside the Gallery during the final days of the ARTEXPRESS exhibition before heading outside to the lawn for bigger performances.

Bring your friends, family and a picnic blanket, enjoy delicious free pizza from Ometto Pizza Bar and Deli, and experience an unforgettable night celebrating Youth Week.
