Gear up for your school formal at clothes swap event

Cessnock and Maitland City Councils are teaming up to host a free formal clothes swap event from 1 to 2.30pm on Saturday 27 July at Gillieston Heights Community Hub.

Whether gearing up for a school formal, end-of-year celebration, job interview, or fresh start in the workplace, this event is specially targeted towards young people and school leavers. It promises to revolutionise your wardrobe without breaking the bank or harming the environment.

Attendees are invited to bring up to six items of clothing or accessories - think party dresses, formal wear, office attire, handbags, jewellery, and shoes - that you no longer use but still have plenty of life left in them.

Cessnock City Mayor Jay Suvaal said fast fashion is one of the world’s largest polluters, and events like this give people the opportunity to reduce textile waste, and support our environment in a fun and impactful way.

"This partnership with Maitland City Council demonstrates our shared commitment to reducing waste and promoting environmental sustainability across our respective communities," said Clr Suvaal.

Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said the event was a chance for local young people to get prepped for the workplace or school formals without the cost.

"Whether you’re looking to pick up something for yourself or a family member, swap events like these are a great way of ensuring old wardrobe items get a new lease on life," said Clr Penfold.

In an effort to support those in need within the Cessnock and Maitland communities, a limited number of formal clothes have been generously donated to the event.

Check in for the clothes swap will take place from 1.00pm to 1.30pm, followed by the main swap from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. There will be refreshments available.
